Gardening in Sri Lanka has an emerging presence shaped by tropical climate, cultural traditions, and land use patterns. In cities such as Colombo, Kandy, and Galle, gardening is practiced through home gardens, community plots, school horticulture programs, and ornamental landscaping, while in rural regions it appears through subsistence cultivation, backyard vegetable plots, and small-scale ornamental gardens. Participation is influenced by agricultural extension services, NGOs, community groups, and local clubs, which guide residents in gardening practices. Infrastructure factors such as soil fertility, water access, seasonal climate, and availability of seeds and tools determine how gardening can progress beyond household-level activity. Compared to other dominant outdoor leisure and livelihood activities, gardening tends to sit as a structured hobby and practical household activity, with visibility shaped by community programs, festivals, and agricultural events. With continued support in training, community gardens, and horticultural outreach, gardening in Sri Lanka is positioned for selective expansion.
